Activity
#1
Hi All,

We've had a few new members join the forums, but sadly, there hasn't been much activity to keep them coming back.

I have been swamped with life stuff for a while, and I haven't been able to stir up any discussion myself.

If you have any projects you're working on, please make a post here and let us in on the fun!

Surely the maker trend hasn't died down that much already Smile.

If I can ever finish getting some cabinets installed, I may develop a project of my own (hopefully before winter is out).

In the meantime, jump in here and tell us what you've got!

Been laid up for a while with a knee infection but am slowly getting my ability to sit in a desk chair in front of the computer and CNC stuff back. Can only manage an hour or so at a time but it's getting better almost every day. We're in a seasonal house now and I've gotten a dinky 3018 CNC router along with a more recent Ender 3 Pro 3D printer.

Mostly just dinking around but I started writing a program to do straight line guilloche between surgeries and will be getting back to it when the 3D project list dies down. Used Processing for no special reason other than it did graphics well and made svg files easy, but couldn't figure out how to do clipping (take a square pattern, cut a circle out of it, for example) before I got side tracked, and trying to do a pattern shift (move an individual cut line up or down) needs some bugs worked out.

Hi Mooselake,

Sorry to hear about the knee - hope that's continuing to improve.

When you say you "couldn't figure out how to do clipping", are you talking about in Processing, or in SVG? I'm guessing Processing, because I think it's pretty straightforward in SVG.

I'm just really dang busy, but if I had a moment, I'd be trying to build myself a 'hearing aid'. Not the small kind though Smile. Just another crazy idea I'd like to pursue. Ain't it wonderful that when you go to buy a hearing aid, they're not medical (not covered by insurance), but heaven help you if you try to make one and sell it - then by golly, they're medical Smile.

Alright, enough of that Smile.

Let us know if you make any progress on the guilloche.

In processing, I didn't know that SVG files have clipping built in. I'll have to pursue that further when I get back to that project.

I just ordered a stack of russian birch and a bit of hardwood, mostly basswood, from Ocooch Hardwoods to get back to using the 3018. My BIL is here for a week, and we're working on my project 1985 Aquaglass bass boat, got the motor tilt/trim working today other than still need to bypass a limit switch (wire broken somewhere inside the remote control, not really necessary) and reverse direction so down isn't up. It came cheap from an estate sale (brother and brother in law are telling me I should have been paid to haul it off Smile ) but a previous owner butchered the wiring. Think the next project is getting the motor (50hp 2 stroke Mariner) electrics working, rebuild the water pump (book says annually so maybe 10 years late) and possibly off to the pros for carb cleaning and checkover, assuming it doesn't immediately explode when cranked over.

It's been suggested the best solution is haul this one to the dump and write a big check for a new one, but not there yet

The Bayliner dealer offered $500 trade on a 20' 90hp center console, plus galvanized trailer, off the $24K price Smile The 16 footer with an 80hp is undoubtedly a lot less, and the Outback should be able to tow it. Still not there, got a couple hundred worth of parts to install first. Who knows, the motor might even turn over with the starter after that crop of electrical gremlins get fixed.

Got the tilt/trim working OK, had to jump the limit switch since the override wire is broke where I can't get to it, got the lower end off (with a 2x4 and hammer, standard advice for stuck merc classic 50s), water pump rebuild starting tomorrow. Took a few hours off to have a tooth pulled and crown impressions made, should have used a door and string and used it for a boat down payment.

36 pounds of plywood and hardwood scheduled to arrive next Monday for the midget cnc router.

Sadly, I don't really speak 'boat' Smile

Even though my Dad had one when I was a kid, and used to take us water skiing at a local lake. I really enjoyed the skiing, but paid no attention to the mechanism that provided the propulsion.

Later on, I heard that a boat may be referred to as 'a hole in the water that you throw money into'. That's been about the extent of my knowledge ever since Smile.

In your case, it seems like you may be throwing a lot of hard work into the hole Smile.

Nevertheless, I wish you luck. Perhaps you are on your way to some water skiing yourself - and thereby making the whole thing a worthy endeavor.

And 36 pounds of stock for your router holds endless possibilities as well.

Hi All,

Well, I think we've had a record number of new registrations - perhaps a tiny positive side-effect of the otherwise awful Covid-19 pandemic.

I also wanted to mention, for any more new users, that once you register, I must manually approve you - which can take up to a day if the timing is bad. In addition, first posts are moderated - I need to approve your first post as well, so they may not appear right away. The forum is not broken (well, not for this reason anyway), your post just won't appear until I pass it on through.

Take care everyone, and enjoy the forums!
